The National Society of Colonial Dames in the State of New York
Inaugural Art Competition
The National Society of Colonial Dames in the State of New York, is pleased to invite New York City students to apply to our inaugural Art Competition. Each applicant is to consider the below theme, interpreting his or her own narrative.
The winning artwork will be displayed in the National Society of Colonial Dames in the State of New York Headquarters Museum House for one year.

2021 Theme: Daily Life in the Colonies
The Thirteen Colonies were founded in the 17th and 18th centuries by European settlers, becoming the United States of America in 1776 after the Declaration of Independence. Both prominent and unknown early settlers of this new world were brave and courageous.
Select a member of one of the original colonies and in your own artistic expression document the significance of the daily life of the new world by creating a portrait. Please include a short text to accompany your work, and it should range in length from 100 to 500 words. This may be in the form of essay, letter, or poetry.
General Information
The competition is open to all students from 4th to 12th grade. Multiple winners will be selected, and the artwork displayed for one year in the National Society of Colonial Dames in the State of New York Headquarters Museum House.
Artwork must be two-dimensional. Each artwork may be no larger than 26 x 26 x 4 inches.
Accepted mediums for a two-dimensional artwork are as follows:
Painting: oil, acrylics, and watercolor
Drawing: colored pencil, pencil, ink, marker, pastels, charcoal (charcoal and pastel are recommended to be fixed)
Collage: must be two dimensional
Print: lithographs, silkscreen, and block prints
Mixed media use of more than two mediums such as pencil, ink, and watercolor

Student Information
Statement of Work - 100-500 words, in the form of essay, letter or poetry
Two digital images of your artwork, in JPEG or PNG format. The first image should be of the front of the work, and the second one should be of the back of the work. A third image is allowed if necessary.
Suitability Guidelines
Exhibits depicting subjects of contemporary political controversy or that are sensationalistic or gruesome in nature are prohibited and will not be considered.
Student Information and Release Form
Each entrant must submit a Student Information and Release Form. The form is available from office@nscdny.org
Information provided should be as thorough as possible. A mailing address should be included, if different from home address.
Judges
The competition is hosted by the Educational Projects and Patriotic Services Committee of the National Society of Colonial Dames in the State of New York.
