Nan A. Rothschild, an urban social archaeologist and adjunct professor at Columbia University, and Archaeologist Arthur Bankoff, will present Buried Beneath the City: An Archaeological History of New York. This award-winning book uses urban archaeology to retell the history of New York, from the deeper layers of the past to the topsoil of recent events. It explores the ever-evolving city and the day-to-day world of residents through artifacts which reveal the density, diversity, and creativity of a city perpetually tearing up its foundations to rebuild itself. Buried Beneath the City is both an archaeological history of New York City and an introduction to urban archaeology.
Show your support for the NSCDNY’s Scholarships by becoming a Patron or Sponsor of the February 27, 2025 Mardi Gras Masquerade hosted by the Educational Projects and Young Members Committees, or buy individual tickets.
